Edgewick Farm.

The gallery are running a Valentine themed exhibition soon. Hence this and the previous picture have couples holding hands in them. I wanted to submit pictures which covered the theme but also, possibly, had a wider appeal. I just hope they will accept them! Helen and I have disagreed about this picture. I'm uneasy about it as I feel the figures are a bit tall, my dear wife doesn't think so. I should have spotted it but paid the price for not stepping back occasionally whilst painting. I'd like to say lesson learned but it's more a case of lesson ignored if I'm honest. Serves me right!!!  Watercolour on Saunders Waterford 140lb ROUGH.

  1. Kev. You are far far too hard on yourself now. I agree with your wife here! I think the figures are just perfect in size. The painting is beautyful, with nice soft colours. I hope that it will be accepted for the exhibition! Good luck!

    1. Well, two women can't be wrong. I suppose I'm still my harshest critic. Many thanks Catherina, glad you like it.

  2. Nice snowy look to this one. I don't think the couple looks too tall at all. Good luck with the exhibit!

  3. I agree with Catharina, Kev. This is beautiful! I understand about being one's harshest critic...I am the same in the photos I take. :)

    1. Thank you Linda. Your photos are beautiful and you have an eye for a great picture, I can never find fault with them. But when we create something, I suppose we are bound to see things in a different way, we have been involved in the whole process.

  4. The figures are fine. They should be that size being in the middle distance.
I hope your paintings get accepted, good luck.

    1. Thanks Pat. I have definitely accepted that I'm wrong about the figures now, to my wife's obvious amusement!! When I first finished this, there was a problem with the link between middle and background. Since the figures were on the dividing line of the two, maybe they appeared magnified in my eyes. As soon as I improved that link, they seemed to look better. I'll never be totally at ease with it now though, that's just me being me. It's all part of the learning process and it's often been said, we learn from making mistakes.......... Hopefully!!!!

  7. Yes, I absolutely agree! Helen is right! The couple is the main Valentine theme and everybody should see the beautiful lovers you created in the midst of the beautiful countryside! I'll keep my fingers crossed!

  8. Hi Kev - I enjoyed reading all the comments reassuring you the figures are the right size.
I agree, but simply because of the relationship (of them) to the base line the tree is on. perfect!
Love the emotional quality in your work.
    A yea to Helen!

    1. Many thanks Julie. As I look at it again, maybe the tree should be taller in a more vertical picture plane, I think maybe the composition is a bit compressed. It's taken me a while to conclude that. Still, the figures are the main interest so, in Vic's words, I'll "get away with it". All the same, it's a good example of how careful planning can make a lot of difference. Helen says I'm still wrong. I may well re-visit this subject in a proper portrait format, it will be interesting to compare.

    1. Thank you so much Catharina. I have now sold three, which I didn't expect. I find this very encouraging and it helps me to work harder and to keep improving.
